In today’s world of technology, most of the electronic equipments are manufactured with SNMP port for network connectivity which eases the use of equipment and gives many more features to be used by a common as well as a professional user. But for the network connectivity of every equipment we need an IP address and today as we are using IPv4 networks so the IP address is of IPv4 series only but the primary problem with IPv4 network addresses is that they are limited in numbers and due to extensive use, very few are left for the use. So the only solution of this problem is to opt for IPv6 address scheme and run the entire networks on IPv6, which can solved the limited address problem as well as give very good security and other feature which are required in present scenario. But again, before putting our network and specifically our critical network onto IPv6 scheme there is a need to test and explore all the features and functionalities of it and then to judge how to migrate and use our network for the best results.
ERNET being the first Indian network to implement IPv6 on its backbone got the capability of running IPv6 traffic on its network and thus the chief investigator of this project holding the vision of ERNET is proposing to setup a IPv6 test lab as per scope of this proposal.
